Funny Brain Teasers and Trick Questions (With Answers)
Brain Teasers guide · 4 min read
The best brain teasers make you think, then make you groan when you hear the answer. Funny brain teasers and trick questions are designed to lead you straight into the obvious wrong answer, then reveal a punchline that's been hiding in plain sight. They're perfect for breaking the ice, stumping your friends, or just enjoying that mix of "how did I miss that?" and a good laugh. Here's a collection of funny brain teasers and trick questions with answers, all built on wordplay and misdirection. Try to guess before you peek.
Classic trick questions
These are the all-time greats, the ones that get almost everyone.
- How many months have 28 days? Answer: all of them. Every month has at least 28 days.
- What has hands but can't clap? Answer: a clock.
- What gets wetter the more it dries? Answer: a towel.
- What can you catch but not throw? Answer: a cold.
- If a rooster lays an egg on top of a barn, which way does the egg roll? Answer: it doesn't. Roosters don't lay eggs.
- What's full of holes but still holds water? Answer: a sponge.
Wordplay that'll make you groan
The trick here is entirely in the language. Read slowly, the answer is in the words.
- A man rode into town on Friday and rode out three days later, also on Friday. How? Answer: his horse is named Friday.
- What word is spelled incorrectly in every dictionary? Answer: the word "incorrectly."
- What begins with an E, ends with an E, but only has one letter in it? Answer: an envelope.
- What five-letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it? Answer: "short" (add "er" to get "shorter").
- Forwards I'm heavy, but backwards I'm not. What am I? Answer: the word "ton" (backwards it's "not").
"Wait, what?" logic traps
These sound like math or logic, but the trick is a hidden assumption.
- A farmer has 17 cows, and all but 8 die. How many are left? Answer: 8.
- You're running a race and you pass the person in second place. What place are you in now? Answer: second, you took their spot, not first.
- A doctor gives you three pills and says to take one every half hour. How long until they're gone? Answer: one hour. Take the first at 0, the second at 30 minutes, the third at 60 minutes.
- Which is heavier: a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks? Answer: they weigh the same, a pound is a pound.
- How much dirt is in a hole 3 feet deep, 3 feet wide, and 3 feet long? Answer: none. A hole is empty.
Why these are so much fun
Funny brain teasers work because of a quirk in how we think: our brains race to the obvious answer before we've actually finished reading. The teaser lays a trap in that gap, and the "answer" turns out to depend on a word you skimmed or an assumption you never questioned. That's also exactly why they're great party games, almost everyone falls for them, and the reveal gets a laugh every time. (The deeper psychology is in our guide to how to solve brain teasers.)
How to stump your friends
A few tips for getting maximum mileage out of these:
- Deliver them confidently and quickly, the faster someone answers, the more likely they'll grab the bait.
- Pause before the reveal to let them commit to a wrong answer.
- Have a few ready in a row, once people are in "trick question" mode they overthink the easy ones too.
- Let them try to stump you back. Half the fun is watching someone else fall for one.
