Number Challenges — hard

Hard puzzles rarely have one clean rule. You might need to track a growing multiplier plus a shrinking offset, or a recursive formula where each term depends on the two before it. The arithmetic stays manageable, but the structure is layered enough that you cannot see the answer at a glance.

When a sequence resists simple rules, try factoring each term. Prime factors, common divisors, and remainder cycles often reveal what plain differences hide. Another useful move: annotate the index positions. Sometimes the rule changes at primes, at perfect squares, or on every third index. Index-aware reasoning shows up a lot at this level.

Mistakes here usually come from committing too early. When two rules both fit the first few terms, pick the one that explains more structure with fewer exceptions. A cleaner rule is almost always the intended one. If neither feels right, check whether the problem has two interleaved subsequences — that is the most common trap at hard.

Challenge mode is worth trying once you are comfortable. No hints forces you to defend every step, and that discipline carries into expert number challenges, where the problems shift from pattern-matching into proof territory.
