Hard crosswords use an 11×11 grid with advanced vocabulary and multi-meaning clues. The surface reading of a clue might point you in one direction while the actual answer goes another way entirely. Words run up to 7 letters, and the lower black-square density means more crossings to manage.

At this level, systematic cross-referencing is essential. Solve whatever you can on the first pass, then go back and use the crossing letters to crack the harder entries.
